The gate on the side of the villa leads to the surrounding woods. It was a pleasant spot where in the summer, people would stroll along the paths, enjoying the cool shade of the tall trees. At the beginning of the 20th century, following oriental fashion, a bamboo grove was planted, which has found a very favorable habitat and grown significantly. Walking on, there is a tower, with Guelph battlements, overlooking a pond (small lake?). This was the wedding gift of Marquis Filippo to his wife Marianna Luzi, as a tower overlooking a small lake is the representation of Luzi’s family coat of arms. To be “politically correct” since the Castiglioni family had strong Catholic roots, the battlements were changed from controversial Ghibelline to the more Pope friendly Guelph. The tower is not only a nice design feature, but it has also a very important function: it is a reservoir that collects water from the villa’s gutters. The water then flows into the pond and eventually into a large tank which supplies water to the planting area below. For the time a very ingenious work of hydraulic engineering so rainwater could be efficiently collected and used for the garden. The irrigated area below was used a planting pot to grow new plants as replacement of the old ones.
