THE VILLA

The villa was built in the late 18th century as the Castiglioni’s family needed a residence close to the farm’s operations. The new building was located next to the existing structure, where the head farmer used to live, there was also a winery where wine was made and a big cellar for storage. Horses’ stables where build next to the villa and a new lawn was laid out. The rooms were refined with decorations that celebrated the family’s famous ancestors and with fine furnishings. A heart-shaped flowerbed was built in front of the main entrance, containing the family’s favorite plants. On the side wall a sundial helped everyone to keep track of time. In the villa, in the evenings, the owners and all the staff gathered to pray the rosary in Latin. Weaving looms were found in the attics, suggesting that there was intense work in hemp, linen, and cotton. The Villa had plenty of tradesmen and activities, groomsmen who looked after horse and stables, weavers, embroiderers, gardeners and farmers who entered the cellar with carts full of vegetables, grains, and grapes. The air was full of lovely smells such a must in the autumn or hashes, used to clean clothes.
