The small star-shaped rocks bed is a memorial of the family’s beloved animals, as a “thank you” and memory of the great love they gave to everyone. The rocks bed was build by Marchesa Marianna Castiglioni Luzi in memory of her beloved dog Leo, her faithful friend who waited every morning in the garden, looking for her gentle pats on his “black fleece”. Marianna Castiglioni Luzi had a passion for writing short poems, she wrote one for Leo, which is stored in the family archive along with Leo’s very large collar, suggesting that he must have been a very big dog. The short poem reads: “Guardian and defender of his master, he hands over to others the duties he fully accomplished and now sleeps in the shade of the white acacia”. Over time other pets memorials joined Leo. Inco, a splendid pointer, the cats Sippa and Alice, the owl Martino, and Pelé, a black Labrador. The last memory is for Nipper, a much-loved rescue dog. The star also commemorates the mare Morella, the last horse to be kept at the stables. Morella was a bay-horse who, as a young female, was ridden by Marquis Ottavio and, in her later years, became a draft horse for the gig displayed at the stables.
